The federal capital is hit by fuel queues again as scarcity persist, Nigeria’s government will issue sovereign debt notes to gasoline importers as a guarantee of subsidy payments, after a lack of credit curbed their ability to purchase and led to shortages and long lines to buy fuel. The notes will be issued for 185 billion naira ($921 million) of outstanding gasoline subsidies after the government paid 321 billion naira to fuel importers in December, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told reporters Tuesday in Abuja, the capital. “We will be issuing sovereign debt notes to them so that the banks will know that the government has undertaken the obligation,” she said. “We also agreed to meet the foreign exchange and interest cost which they were agitated about.” Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, relies on fuel imports to meet more than 70 percent of domestic needs because of inadequate refining capacity. Confab: Delegates clash over religion

At the venue of the ongoing National Conference in Abuja was quite as usual on tuesday as delegates of the two major religions engaged in a debate over the dominance of Islam in the 1999 Constitution without any mention of Christianity. But the intervention of the leadership of the  conference saved the situation. The drama ensued when two Christian delegates representing Christian Leaders, Bishop of Kafanchan Diocese of Catholic Church, Joseph Bagobiri and Pastor Emmanuel Bosun (Ogun State), raised the issue which they described as unfair treatment of Christians and Christianity in the country. This angered their Muslim counterparts, who opposed their submissions. They had both submitted that the constitution of Nigeria was skewed in favour of Islam and Muslims with a call on delegates to ensure that the imbalance was corrected. Bagobiri  opened the debate on religion. He gave a detailed analysis of how the Nigerian constitution did not have any mention of Chris...

Confab: Delegates adopt 70 per cent majority voting mode

Delegates to the National Conference on Monday closed their ranks and adopted  70 per cent majority  as the voting mode to be used in taking decisions  at the conference. The agreement followed the adoption of the recommendation of the 50-member Consensus Group selected by the conference Chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi (retd.), last Wednesday. Delegates from the North and South had disagreed on the modality to reaching decisions in the absence of  a consensus. While delegates from the North asked for retention of three quarters in the National Conference Procedure Rules 2014, those from the South wanted two-thirds majority in the absence of a consensus. On resumption of the plenary in Abuja, the Vice-Chairman of the conference, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, informed the delegates  of the 70 per cent majority recommended by the consensus group. He then called for discussions on the recommendation. But there was an overwhelming call for a motion on the re...

"The National President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday led Muslims to protest the alleged marginalisation of Muslim in the composition of the on-going National Conference. President Jonathan’s 75% Voting rule Splits CONFAB

"[The first major deadlock set in at the National Conference, yesterday, when delegates were split over the clause stipulating that all decisions to be reached must be done through consensus or a vote of 75 per cent majority. Tension began to rise when the chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi, attempted to overrule a delegate, Chief Mike Ozekhome, who had called for the amendment of the provision to make it possible for any decision to be arrived at through two thirds majority, which he said was the same position with the constitution and global best practices. Ozekhome had argued that it would be against the interest of natural justice and the nation for major decisions to be decided by only a few persons at the confab, since the meaning of 75 per cent was such that even if the delegates had up to 74.99 per cent, they could not change anything while a minority of 25 per cent of the members could easily win over anything they decide on under the rule of consensus... The activist...

Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) also denied reports that each of the delegates will get N12 million each at the end of the three-month duration for the conference. He explained that the actual monthly take home pay for each delegate is about N3.3 million. In his explanation, Ozekhome said: “From the alert from my bank, the sum of N1,460,000 was paid in, representing two weeks allowance. Delegates to the ongoing National Conference on Monday in Abuja queued for about two hours before gaining entrance into the conference hall, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Some of the delegates who commented on the development, expressed displeasure over the discomfort they were subjected to and urged the secretariat to intervene to prevent a reoccurrence. Some of the delegates, including Mr. Issa Aremu, Mr. Dan Iwuanyuanwu and Chief Femi Falana (SAN), drew the attention of the Chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi (rtd), to the plight of the delegates. “Mr. Chairman, what the delegates were subjected to this morning is a clear case of administrative lapse. “Many delegates queued for hours outside before they could gain entrance into this hall. “I think the secretariat should do something about it,” Aremu, Vice-President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said. Nwanyanwu, Chairman, Labour Party, complained that security operatives at the gate of the National Judicial Inst...

Confab: Jonathan has hidden agenda, say Northern Muslims

May this first in the history CONFAB be a success! The apex body for Islamic organisations in the North, the Jama’atul Nasril Islam, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of having a hidden agenda with the convocation of the National Conference. The JNI, led by the Sultan  of Sokoto, Alhaji  Sa’ad Abubakar,  said despite the concerns expressed by well-meaning  Nigerians, the President had gone ahead to inaugurate the conference, in Abuja on Monday. It also said that Moslems were short-changed in the selection of delegates to the conference. The JNI’s Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, at a news conference on Wednesday in Kaduna, said no amount of conferences would solve the myriad of problems confronting Nigeria, except “when our leaders lead with justice and equity in the country.” He said the process of selecting delegates to the conference negated  the spirit of democracy as majority of delegates to the conference were Christians. According t...

Immigrations Recruitment: Atleast 7 Dead, Many injured in Stampede in Abuja

The rate of unemployment in this country is alarming, the number of people gathered for immigration exams today in Abuja calls for effort from the government to reduce unemployment. Not less than 7 people were killed and dozens injured in Nigeria’s capital after thousands of panicked job-seekers stampeded during a government recruitment drive in the national stadium on Saturday. I was told the exam questions also linked. One witness said the stampede broke out as applicants surged towards a central stage. They said only one entrance to the 60,000-capacity stadium was open. It wasn’t clear how many people were inside at the time of the crush. “The immigration service was having a recruitment exercise at the stadium … there was a stampede and they brought the victims to the national hospital,” said hospital spokesman Tayo Haastrup. Many injured people could not be admitted to hospital due to lack of capacity. What a country?

Anti-Corruption Network (ACN), led by Dino Melaye, is organizing what it described as “the mother of all protests” against the Petroleum Resources Minister, Allison Deziani Madueke and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), over the missing $20billion and other issues.  Mr. Melaye, ACN said it would no longer keep quiet over issues that concern the Nigerian people and may destroy their future. “Police and other security agencies should be ready to arrest, intimidate, harass, shoot and tear gas and maltreat us,” the statement said.  “Nigerians should not be taken for granted. The time for change is now!” It stressed that corruption is the bane of Nigeria’s development and that ACN will fight it, warning that in an unjust society, silence is a crime. “Through this protest we will prove that power truly belong to the people and will call the attention of the world on Nigeria.  We have no other country to call our own but Nigeria.
