16 people were feared dead after a hot air balloon caught on fire in Texas

16 people were feared dead Saturday after a hot air balloon caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas, officials siad. Caldwell County Sheriff Daniel Law said in a statement his office received a 911 call at 7:44 a.m. local time about a possible vehicle accident at a spot near Lockhart, Texas. He said when emergency responders and deputies arrived on the scene it was apparent that the reported fire was the basket portion of a hot air balloon. “The Balloon was occupied and it does not appear at this time that there were any survivors of the crash,” the sheriff said. “Investigators are determining the number and the identities of victims at this time.” The balloon was carrying 16 people, officials said. Lynn Lunsford with the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the accident happened when the hot air balloon crashed into a pasture. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it has arrested some suspects in connection with the killing of a woman preacher in Kubwa, FCT. The FCT command’s Spokesman, ASP Anjuguri Manzah confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja. He said the Commissioner of Police, Alkali Usman, has directed the homicide section to take over the investigation. “We have made some arrests and they are helping in our investigation. “The commissioner of police has ordered the homicide section of the command to take over the investigation of the case,” he said. The spokesman, however, did not mention the number of suspects arrested. He said that personnel of the command had visited the scene of the incident and that investigation had begun. NAN reports that the woman, whose name was not disclosed, was killed while preaching in the early hours of the day around the pipeline area of Kubwa, a satellite town of the FCT. (NAN)

FG extends Eid-il-Fitr holiday to Thursday

The Federal Government on Tuesday extended the Eid-il-Fitr holiday to Thursday. A statement issued by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, in Abuja quoted the Sultan of Sokoto,  Sa’ad Abubakar III,  as saying  the Ramadan fast continues on Tuesday due to the “non-sighting of the moon” heralding the month of Shawwal in the Muslim calendar. Sultan Abubakar is the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. Dambazau noted that the federal government has now declared Wednesday and Thursday  as public holiday. The federal government through the Police Service Commission, Friday, retired 21 Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), all of whom are seniors to the Acting Inspector General of Police. A statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani confirmed that the 21 Assistant Inspectors General of Police were seniors to the new acting Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, According to the statement, the affected AIGs are Bala A Hassan, AIG Zone 2, Yahaya Garba Ardo, Irmiya F Yarima, AIG Zone 9, Danladi Y Mshebwala, Tambari Y. Mohammed, AIG Zone 10 and Bala Magaji Nasarawa, AIG Zone 7, Abuja. Others are Musa Abdulsalam, Adisa Bolanta, AIG Zone 6, Mohammed J Gana, Umaru Abubakar, Manko former AIG Zone 2, Lagos, Lawal Tanko, AIG Zone 8 and Olufemi A. Adenaike, AIG in charge Training.
