President Jonathan's 2014 Democracy Day Speech(Full Text)

Fellow Nigerians, 1. I greet and felicitate with you all, today, as we mark 15 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in our beloved country. 2. Our dear nation, Nigeria, has certainly come a long way and made notable progress since our first Democracy Day on May 29, 1999 when the military finally relinquished power and handed over to a democratically-elected government, marking the true beginning of a government of the people, by the people, for the people.” 3. Although I have ordered a low-key commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day in deference to the current mood of the nation, there can be no doubt that the past 15 years, the longest period of sustained democratic governance in our country, have been a blessing to us, as a people. 4. As we commemorate 15 years of our Fourth Republic today therefore, I believe that it is fitting that we pay tribute once again to all those who played a part in restoring our nation to the true path of democratic governance, built on the f

Pregnant Pakistani woman stoned to death by her family members

Pregnant Pakistani woman stoned to death by her family members, guess what is her crime? Because she eloped with the man she loved rather marring the man the family chose for her. The terrible fate of Farzana Parveen, 25, is one shared by all too many women in Pakistan and elsewhere. She was killed in the name of "honor," on the grounds her actions had brought shame on her family. According to a report published in April by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 869 women in the country were the victims of honor killings last year. And activists say the true number may be much higher. Parveen's brutal killing is all the more shocking because it was so public. She was beaten to death with bricks close to the high court in the eastern city of Lahore by a group of about 20 people, including her brothers, father and cousin, police said. One family member made a noose of rough cloth around her neck while her brothers smashed bricks into her skull, said Mushtaq Ahmed, a po

He said, “The people of Chibok are anxiously waiting for the safe return of their children. Except for the unfortunate situation where two of the parents have passed on. Why we can’t rescue Chibok girls now – Military

THE Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has said that the military will not use force to rescue over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram on April 14 because of the need to save their lives. Badeh, who received members of the Citizens Initiative for Security Awareness outside the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, insisted that the military had since located where the girls were being held. The CDS assured that the military had the capacity to bring back the girls alive and therefore advised that it should be allowed to do its work. He said, “We want our girls back; our military can do it, but where they are held, we cannot go with force. “If we go with force, what will happen? they will kill them . So nobody should come and say the Nigerian military does not know what it is doing. We know what we are doing; we can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back. So we are working. “The good news for the girls is that we know where they are but we ca

Real Madrid Beat Atlético Madrid to Win Champions League

Real Madrid are a football club who define themselves by their performance in the Champions League, which is why they will consider anything but victory in Saturday’s final a disaster. Real Madrid came from behind to claim the Champions League crown in extra time at the expense of Atletico Madrid . Diego Godin profited from an Iker Casillas error to head Atletico in front after Gareth Bale had fired wide. Real fought back after the break and Sergio Ramos finally broke Atletico's resolve in the 93rd minute. Bale put Real in front before Marcelo scored a third and Cristiano Ronaldo added a penalty to seal victory and a 10th European Cup for Real. Anyone who plays for or manages Real is left in no doubt about the top priority every season, and if you are unsure about what is expected upon moving to the Bernabeu it is made clear to you very quickly. You can win league titles and domestic cups, but that will not keep you in a job for

Made-in-Nigeria Cars will soon be rolling out from next month, Dr. Samuel Ortom, stated this when a delegation from Automobile Peugeot, France led by its Vice President, Mr. Yves Moulin, visited him at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. Ortom said following the commencement of the new auto policy, the Federal Government had received a lot of interest from vehicle manufacturers. The minister said, “The automotive policy is derived from the National Industrial Revolution Plan, and we are happy with the response we have been getting from the automotive industry worldwide; and with your coming, it shows that this policy is working. “When the policy was introduced, people criticised it and most of them do not understand the benefit of the policy. He said the US team, working with the Nigerian government, would do everything possible to free the girls. Earlier, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said he hoped "a turning point" had been reached in the fight against Islamist insurgents Boko Haram. Nigeria has been criticised for its slow response to the kidnappings. The schoolgirls were seized from their boarding school on the night of 14 April in the town of Chibok in north-eastern Borno state. The Nigerian group's latest actions have attracted such unanimous international condemnation that few will want to be publicly associated with them for quite some time” It is believed they are being held somewhere in the vast forested areas that stretch from near Chibok into neighbouring Cameroon. "Our inter-agency team is hitting the ground in Nigeria n

At least three people were killed when two buses driving on a busy highway in the Kenyan capital Nairobi were struck by explosive devices on Sunday, the day after attacks in Mombasa.
