A fierce gun battle between Soldiers and a group of armed bandits in Kwasa-kwasa Village, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, yesterday resulted in the death of at least seven people including senior military officers.
The casualties, include two military officers, two vigilante men, and three other civilians in the village.
Many soldiers and the civilians, our correspondent gathered, sustained various degrees of injuries during the exchange of fire that lasted for almost three hours.
The Military authorities confirmed the killing of two of its officers in the operation.
The Army spokesman of 1 Mechanized Division in Kaduna, Colonel Sani Usman Kukasheka, who confirmed the incidence, said “I can confirm to you that there was an encounter between our soldiers and insurgents in Birnin Gwari in which a number of the assailants were killed. Unfortunately, we also sustained two casualties.”
it was gathered that the gun battle between the soldiers and the gunmen, started when the soldiers stormed the Kwasa-kwasa Village to arrest the armed bandits who had been killing and terrorising the villagers.
The military presence in the area came four days after the gunmen, had unleashed terror on three villages in the area killing many and rendering hundreds homeless.
A resident, Audu Bala, said Friday on phone that four vehicles belonging to security personnel were also burnt.
According to him, it was the gunmen who opened fire on the soldiers who were in the area to forestall any break of law and order.
Another source also confirmed that several other villagers and security men were injured, but added that the bravery of soldiers and other security officers helped to curtail more casualties.
Though, the number of the casualties were still uncertain as at the time of fielding this report, the Secretary of the local government, Zubairu Zakariya, said details on the casualty was being compiled.
